The Seagull
"In order to create real art, you need to wrestle with ideas that are bigger than you are. Cleverness is cheap. Real art is raw, truthful." - Treplev
On August 1st 2019, Upper Peninsula Shakespeare Festival returned with Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, performed as a fully staged reading at the Marquette Regional History Center. Chekhov’s beloved and classic “slice of life” play proves the long-standing formula of comedy equaling tragedy plus time. Chock full of sumptuous characters portrayed by local favorites, our story studied the frustrating facets of bitter dissatisfaction, the ridiculousness of the human spirit and ultimately the inevitable and ironic satire of it all. That’s The Seagull– that’s life!
